Works with BMPCC 4K camera

Works with BMPCC 4K camera
OLD Review: (First picture only)Bought this Samsung T5 Portable SSD 500GB USB 3.1 (MU-PA500B/AM) for 149.99$ for Blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k (BMPCC). Right out of the box, it was formatted to ‘OSX extended’ using the camera itself. Testing/video recordings were done for one minute only and it did pass all codecs/modes/max fps (including 120fps), except Lossless RAW (which is recorded in DNG) at 60fps for both UHD 3840x2160 and 4KDCI 4096x2160. See attached picture for more details. This SamsungT5 SSD can record excess of 880Mbps which is manufacturer’s stated data storage/recording rate for ProRes 422HQ, 3840x2160 at 24fps.Pros/cons:* Price, you decide if it is right. (You can get 1TB internal SSD for same price too)* Lightweight and half the size of regular SSD.* Comes with USB 3.1 and USB C adapter cables.* Power consumption is just 4 watts (0.8A at 5vDC) in comparison to 6 watts (1.2A at 5vDC) by other Samsung 860 EVO V-NAND 500Gb internal SSD.* Warms up fast when recording at higher resolution at 60fps continuously for more than 5-10mins.* 8 out of the 10 times, Bmpcc camera refuses to recognize the drive, especially when both are booted up ‘plugged in’ together. Solution is to plug it in only after the camera is powered up first.* USB 3.1 to iMac computer data transfer speed is approx. 400-500mbps.UPDATE October 2019 (see 2nd update picture with red note):Above review was for older/original firmware 5.2 of the BMPCC 4K camera. Good news is that Samsung T5 now can record ALL new formats (as par new Firmware 6.2.1 update :) without any problems.Note: Bad news is that new firmware allows you to record 120fps in RAW (aka BRAW) and ProRes at 1080p only.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far so awesome, but not as fast as advertised
Reviewed in Canada on September 15, 2021
- using a MacBook Pro 2015 with the 2TB T5 model, so I just connected, opened up Disk Utility and formatted the drive accordingly (in my case, Mac OSX extended, journaled) - no need to use whatever software came in the drive...

- speeds are slower than advertised, but they always are...

- it's so tiny and light!!! They claim it can withstand impacts, but I don't have faith in that. It is a sturdy, solid little wafer tho....

- it got noticeably warm *once*, but not since (been just over a month)

- want 2TB lightweight drive cheaper than the SanDisk, this is your guy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works really well and is very portable!
Reviewed in Canada on August 16, 2020
I use this as an external drive for my iPad Pro. Works really well, very small and portable, sleek-looking in metallic blue. It comes with a short USB-C to USB-C cable as well as a USB-C to USB cable so it can work with either port connection. Very reliable so far and file transfer speed is okay. What I like about it is that it is solid state, so it works really fast as it does not have any moving parts that need to spin like regular disc drives. Highly recommeded!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good (with one caveat)

First, the case was not included. That was an extra purchase. Just to be clear it’s in the pics only because I highly recommend at least a small “EVA” case since it is light weight and probably wouldn’t hold up to being crushed or dropped. The case recommended was perfect.

It’s a great drive. Good construction/ metal outer casing. Large capacity @ 2TB is perfect for 4k footage. Decent/ reasonable price. Good performance. Apx 500mbs synchronous. Fast enough to work with 4K prores on the go. Certainly the fastest external I have. See pics for screen grab. Very compact and easy to carry. However, it doesn’t like extension cables in the least. This is not a fault of the drive, just a fault of crappy and wildly different USB C standards. So far it seems to only work with the original cables. I had trouble even mounting the drive with cables other than the original. I’m using an Abelton USBC card on my Mac Pro and the Samsung seems to prefer the type A gen 2 port on one of my machines. On the other machine USBC is fine. They have slight differences. With a direct connection I get full speed. So far longer cables and adapter cables seem to crush the performance ranging from slow to slow as molasses. I’ll update when I find a better cable longer than 1-3 FT. In the mean time I’m ok with the short cable as long as I get full speed. The only
Other gripe I have is purely aesthetic. I hate that the label with the serial/ model number and bar code is on the front of the drive. Ugly staring at it on my desk. Samsung please just laser etch it in next time.
