I cook 10 eggs every Sunday so I have two to put in my lunchbox each weekday morning. I previously had Cuisinart's 7-egg version of this cooker but, of course, that necessitated cooking twice for the week whereas this one will do a full 10. (BTW: the 7-egg version works just fine, though the paint on the cooking element starts chipping after a while whereas this one has a stainless steel heating element)
Cooking with this gadget involves:
- adding a measured amount of water to bowl-shaped heating section of the base (amount determines the cook time; the unit shuts off when the water has boiled off)
- piercing the tops of the eggs with the egg piercer on the bottom of the included measuring cup
- placing the cooking tray on top of the now-water filled base and putting the eggs in the cutouts
- if cooking the full 10 eggs, add the spacer tray on top of the first layer of 7-eggs and populate it with three more eggs
- gently place the dome on top, plug in and switch the unit on
When the water has evaporated, the unit will click off and start beeping; note that you must switch it off as, once cool again, the unit will switch back on.
I fill a large bowl with cold water and use the handles to lift the egg tray out and place all the eggs in the water. (CAREFUL! THE METAL IS HOT! Wear oven mitts to avoid burning your fingers)
Voila! Perfectly consistent eggs, every time.
TIPS & TRICKS
- I've found that I need less water than the measure suggests for a given egg hardness; my "medium" eggs are cooked with water measured to about halfway between soft and medium, if doing the full 10 eggs.
- the poached eggs require as much or MORE water in the cooking element than you'd expect; if you use too little, you'll end up with undercooked, runny eggs. Also: use butter or something like Pam cooking spray in the poaching trays otherwise you'll never be able to get the poached eggs out!
- the stainless steel, bowl-shaped heating element tends to get stained due to impurities dripping off the eggs (calcium? iron?) Per the manual, this is ridiculously easy to remove: add a teaspoon of white vinegar and wipe it with a towel. WAY easier and less damaging than trying to scrub this with abrasives
CONCLUSION
For consistent, no-hassle, fast cooked eggs, this is a great, small home appliance. I suppose if you're a restauranteur cooking dozens upon dozens at a time, this won't do enough to be of much use and you probably have a production line with laser thermometers and vats of precisely temperature controlled water so we're talking about a completely different market. ;)
If you like eggs. Get yourself one of these.
